How to Make a Year-end Job Search Work for You!

By Paul Megan Most active job hunters who are in the market during the holiday season tend to put everything on hold. No one is looking to hire, they rationalize. Besides, who wants to think about changing job during such a fun and family season? This could be a serious mistake. You could be missing out on one of the most productive job search times of the year. There are several reasons why you should take advantage of the season. 1. Most companies are making year-end hiring decisions based on retirements or transfers. 2. Manpower needs based on company growth are reviewed as budgets are being prepared. 3. Actual job descriptions have not yet been announced. But managers are very aware of what their hiring requirement s will be. 4. As a result, competition for job is minimal or non-existent. In fact, your ability to intervene in the traditional hiring process in advance of job opening announcements gives you a serious leg up. The best way is to get yourself in front of a decision-maker without requiring him/her to think of you as a job candidate. This gives you an opportunity to explore corporate manpower needs and expectations without forcing a premature hiring decision. Activating your personal contacts is the best way to identify managers who could be in a position to develop an interest in you. Get your family, friends and acquaintances to help you identify decision-makers from among their contacts. Then ask them to personally introduce you. Keep the meetings with these hiring managers very casual and informal. For example, get together for breakfast or lunch . . . on the weekend or in the evening. Your purpose is to introduce yourself and inquire about growth plans of the company. At the same time you convey information about yourself . . . but without asking for a job or implying that your job hunting. Taking advantage of the congeniality of the season allows you to conduct these meetings comfortable and informally. They can lead to unexpected job opportunities! Paul Megan writes for EEI, the world-class pioneer in alternative job search techniques and non-traditional career advancement strategies . . . since 1985. Simple, and Stylish Wedding Reception Centerpiece: Craft Project

By Lisa Robbin This simple, yet elegant table centerpiece is a great way to make a fancy “to do” at each table, without breaking the bank. This is so easy, even a child can do it! I had my 8 year old son help me. For my own wedding, we picked up stemware at our local thrift stores. The idea wasn’t to have every table look exactly the same, but rather for each table to be a variation on a theme. If you’re looking for a more unified appearance, please make sure your count is accurate and buy everything you need at once, to ensure colors and shapes match. For each centerpiece, you will need: 1 wine goblet, or other stemware 2 pieces of tulle 9-12″ in width (either square or circle) 2 contrasting curling ribbons approximately 10-14″ long 1-3 tea light candles (the 7-hour floating type)or other floating candles, depending on the width of the glass water 1. Stack the tulle pieces. If you are using square pieces, turn one of the pieces so that you have an 8-point star shape. It will add more visual appeal to the finished project. You might consider using 2 diferent colored pieces of tulle to add a more dramatic appearance. 2. Center the glass on the tulle. We’re about to tie the tulle around the base of the glass, but before we do, we need to get our ribbons ready. 3. Take the 2 lengths of ribbon and pull them together. Make sure they are not twisted. You want one color on the “inside” and the other on the “outside” so that when we tie them around the stem of the glass, we have a beautiful contrasting mix of color. 4. Pull up the tulle and secure it in place with the ribbon. Tie a knot to secure the ribbon to the stem. Now make a bow and pull the ribbons apart so that your bow has more volume. Curl the ends of your curling ribbon and arrange the curls around the base of the glass. 5. Fill your goblet with water. You might consider coloring your water with a bit of food coloring to match your wedding colors. 6. Float the candle(s) on top of the water. Light the candles as the reception begins. Look for long-burning floating candles. You don’t want your candles burning out just as dinner ends. A single candle floating on water will gravitate to the edge of the glass. Try to find glasses big enough to float 2-4 candles safely. Too much heat may damage fragile stemware, so use caution. For a more elegant look, arrange goblets of different heights on the same table or change the level of the water in each glass to create the illusion of height. You can also decorate your tulle with beads, or find tulle that is already adorned with sequins or beads. Use your imagination and create something perfect for your special occasion. Place the goblet on a mirrored coaster to create a beautiful reflection of light. Good luck, and best wishes on your special day. Body Detox at Home Get Rid of the Poisons!

By Matt Ream There are toxic substances all around us. They are in the air, in the water, in our cosmetics and toiletries even in our food. These toxins include chemicals, additives, carcinogens, hormone disruptors, poisons and contaminants. It’s scary, I know. Fortunately, there are ways to rid your body of these harmful substances. The theory behind doing a body detox home or anywhere else is to rid the body of these harmful substances. The toxins that we ingest, through whatever method, are normally stored in body fat. The kidneys, liver, lungs and skin are designed to process environmental contaminants and expel them from the body. However, many people believe, and research is confirming, that not all of these toxins are being properly processed. There are three major ways to detox your body: detox diets, body wraps or patches, and nutritional supplements or pills. A detox diet normally consists of refraining from most of the foods we normally eat. It may involve going through a liquid fast, where you only drink liquids, instead of eating solid food. It may involve eating certain foods which would be organic and very high in fiber. Most body detox proponents claim that the majority of the toxins and up in the colon, where they cause 90% of all diseases. A detox diet should consist of avoiding white sugar and processed flour, as should any sensible eating program. The detox diet goes a step further however in restricting intake of most other foods as well. Fruits and vegetables should be a significant part of the food intake. Drinking a lot of water is also important, as is limiting or eliminating alcohol consumption. Fasting may take the form of water fasting, or one only drinks water, or juice fasting, where one can get some nutrients by drinking juice. Juice also has a lot of fiber which helps with the colon cleansing. Stick to organic, natural juices, and not highly processed concentrates or flavored sugar waters labeled as juice. Body wraps involve wrapping the body in healthy substances in an effort to draw the toxins out of the body. These substances may be things such as herbs, sea salt, and various clays. You can pay a lot of money for a body wrapped in a spot, or you can create your own at home. Foot patches work similarly, in that they draw the toxins out of the body. The foot patches are normally applied to the bottom of the foot and worn during the night while the wearer is sleeping. In the morning, the patch is removed and is noticeably darker, from the toxins it has removed. Doing a body detox at home often consists of taking pills or supplements. These are generally designed to help cleanse the colon. They may be taken for three to four weeks then not taken for another three to four weeks, until the cycle is repeated. There are also supplements that will help replace the nutrients lost during a fast or a restricted eating plan. Whichever method you decide to use, you can detox your body at home, and save expensive trips to doctors, alternative health care providers, or other detox practitioners. Learn to detox your body @home, quickly and easily. Bringing Clients in the Door: How Professionals Can Encourage Business

By Sharon Drew Morgen Youre a professional either a doctor, or a dentist, or an artist. Maybe youre an independent sales person who works on commission, or a speaker who must sell yourself. You might even be a B-C business whose product depends on a product or service youve developed. Youve been trained well; you went to a professional school, or positioned yourself as an expert, and youre very good at what you do. And now youve gone into business to give others the opportunity to pay you to do what you do best. You rent space, hire staff, take out a loan possibly a very large loan to populate your office with the best: technology, staff, ambiance. And a few of your friends come in as your first clients. And then you wait for others to walk in the door. And you wait. Youre not a business person and youve not been taught the fine art of marketing. Not to mention that its embarrassing to have to tell others how good you are and that they should pay you because youre good. Hi. Im Joe Smith. Im the new doc in town. You oughta come in and see me. Im really good and Ill take good care of you. When can I expect you? Ive got time to see you, um, all day today, and, um, well, whenever you want to come in I could make time for you. When are you coming in? WHY CONVENTIONAL SALES DOESNT WORK IN THE PROFESSIONAL MARKET Part of the problem is that sales has been based on some rendition of a push strategy, or the newly coined approach of a relationship (which does nothing more than try to have the prospect like you), and of course all of your competitors are doing the same thing. But the model as we’ve known it is inefficient. Statistically, the very model brings in no more than 7% of its target (obviously leaving a 93% failure rate). Following the conventional sales model, youd have to sell your services by influencing/convincing/persuading folks that you are better than your competitors, that you are to be trusted, that you are price competitive, and that the buyer needs you and your product. And, whatever else they based their decision on. Indeed, that is the problem: who knows what buyers base their decisions on? They do. Only the client knows the criteria to fix or change something. Its been a fallacy, all these years, to believe that because the vendor (you, in this case) can understand the problem (and you do! You do!), and your product can solve their problem (you can! You can!), that your product is a natural fit and that of course you are the best vendor. But only those who live inside the problem have the capacity to understand the problem and resolve it. While a solution may look obvious to you as an outsider, it isnt obvious at all to them. Theyve had the problematic issues, along with a certain set of givens and expectations and work-arounds, in place for a long time; it feels normal to them. And until/unless they are willing and able to do something different, they wont change. At the end of the day, you will never fully understand the clients criteria, or system, or viewpoint, or set of systems that hold the problem in place; and you cant know their criteria for making a change or for using you over their current provider (and everyone has some sort of provider). When I moved here to Austin, I obviously had to change my long term dental providers. After working with a new periodontist for a while, he suggested a regular dentist for a cap I needed. Of course I went on his recommendation. But as I sat in the chair with a numb mouth filled with dental paraphernalia, this guy began telling me about his political convictions which were very, very opposite to mine, and frankly, offensive to me. Next. Was his care good? Probably. Was he a nice guy? Um well, maybe. But Im a highly political animal and couldnt abide by political opinions being spouted at me when I was helpless to object. He had no idea what my criteria were. In fact, he was actually surprised when he called me months later to get my ongoing business and I told him no. Its not about the product. Its not about how wonderful you are. Its about the internal systems the beliefs, the tangle of relationships and policies and historic remedies and people issues and and and. HOW DO WE FIND THE RIGHT CLIENTS? Given you know your craft but may not have the same level of savvy to garner all of the patients or clients that you deserve, how indeed do you get the business to come in the door? Remember: its not about you. Remember that its about how the client makes their best decision. Your job is to help your clients decide to work with you. Here are some ideas that might help. Pick the right ones for you: send out a monthly newsletter with an article of interest. Make sure you mention a new product or service that you have somewhere in the newsletter, but ensure there are articles of interest written by you and other colleagues. This makes you an authority and keeps you top of mind for when your client/prospect can make a new decision. Of course, the article itself might help people decide to come in. contact colleagues in adjacent industries (like periodontists if youre a dentist) and arrange some form of referencing model so you both help each other get business. Getting a referral from a current provider is a great help in the decision process. hold monthly lunch sessions that teach aspects of your business to prospects/clients. Either do it yourself or invite some of your business partners (see #2) to speak some of the time. That will bring in their clients to meet you, help them highlight their skills so they can get new business also, and will offer your current clients new data. write interesting articles in local magazines. This will get you natural press. write interesting articles in e-zines that your client base might read or that will get you local notice. hire someone to call your current clients to find out how you are doing; have them tell you what you can do better, what theyd like to see that they currently dont get from you, and mention youd like a referral if they would feel comfortable doing that. Use facilitative questions like: What would you need to see from us to ensure you get all of your needs met? What would that look like for you? What would you need to see from us to feel comfortable recommending us to a friend? give your current clients 50% off on X if they send a referral. This will not only get you a new client but will ensure that you keep your current client base. Its easier to keep current clients then it is to get new ones. set up a website. Have a page for each of your services, and have links to your business partners/colleagues (see #2). Have your newsletters accessible, and have links to other authorities who are affiliated with your work. Make it a site that your clients or prospects can come to meet you, and determine that youre a professional. By the way, make your site stand for who you are: make your personality shine through. For example, I have 2 main sites: one is to introduce my Buying Facilitation Method, and its mainstream looking to make a large number of people comfortable with a revolutionary idea. My keynote site is creative, flowing, powerful, and fun: this introduces my character as a speaker very different from an information based site as my other one is. These ideas should get you started. Just remember to stay open and flexible to whatever will be necessary to have people decide that you will be part of the solution they need to embrace to solve their problem. Good luck.
